Accuracy threshold for postselected quantum computation

We prove an accuracy threshold theorem for fault-tolerant quantum computation based on error detection and postselection. Our proof provides a rigorous foundation for the scheme suggested by Knill, in which preparation circuits for ancilla states are protected by a concatenated error-detecting code and the preparation is aborted if an error is detected. The proof applies to independent stochast...

Advances in Quantum Metrology

In classical estimation theory, the central limit theorem implies that the statistical error in a measurement outcome can be reduced by an amount proportional to n by repeating the measures n times and then averaging. Using quantum effects, such as entanglement, it is often possible to do better, decreasing the error by an amount proportional to n. Quantum metrology is the study of those quantu...

Exponentially enhanced quantum metrology.

We show that when a suitable entanglement-generating unitary operator depending on a parameter is applied on N qubits in parallel, a precision of the order of 2(-N) in estimating the parameter may be achieved. This exponentially improves the precision achievable in classical and in quantum nonentangling strategies.

Postselected versus nonpostselected quantum teleportation using parametric down-conversion

We study the experimental realization of quantum teleportation as performed by Bouwmeester et al. @Nature ~London! 390, 575 ~1997!# and the adjustments to it suggested by Braunstein and Kimble @Nature ~London! 394, 841 ~1998!#. These suggestions include the employment of a detector cascade and a relative slow-down of one of the two down-converters. We show that coincidences between photon pairs...

Quantum metrology: dynamics versus entanglement.

A parameter whose coupling to a quantum probe of n constituents includes all two-body interactions between the constituents can be measured with an uncertainty that scales as 1/n3/2, even when the constituents are initially unentangled. We devise a protocol that achieves the 1/n3/2 scaling without generating any entanglement among the constituents, and we suggest that the protocol might be impl...
